On October 28th, 2025, Noyb, an Austrian data protection advocacy group, filed a criminal complaint in Europe against Clearview AI for their face recognition software, which they said was invasive. Clearview AI is a software group providing facial recognition through AI. They were able to file a criminal complaint through the GDPR, or the General Data Protection regulation, a regulation for the European Union, that regulates personal data of citizens, especially for data transferred out of the US.

Noyb filed this criminal complaint for many reasons. Their reasons are due to Clearview’s background, which was used for law enforcement, which they claim that Clearview has amassed over 60 billion photos for the identification of many people, which is a huge privacy concern. However, the biggest concern is that Clearview AI is used by many popular groups, like Walmart and Bank of America, striking concern for American citizens.
However, these practices were brought to light before, in 2020 by the New York Times, when they revealed Clearview’s practices of data violations. This strikes a concern for many people.
In my opinion, I believe that we must stand up to tools like these. Although they provide an idea of “safety”, and “protection”, these tools stand up against ideas like the basic human right of privacy.
