Last month, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested outside of an ICE detention center on counts of trespassing. The charges against him were eventually dropped by the federal attorney's office. Even when incarcerated, Baraka grew in popularity in the Democratic Party due to his strong-willed means for creating reform. Recently, there have been calls from Democrats for the gubernatorial nominee Mikie Sherrill to give him the second highest rank in the state, lieutenant governor. A major argument that has spread for giving him the spot is the fact that he is popular in the African American community. Baraka has pledged that he will continue to fight Trump on his policies on migrants.
