El Salvador, a small nation in Central America, has had only 114 homicides in 2024, according to the nation's attorney general. While it has more proportion than other countries in the Americas, it is still a historical low for the nation. Salvadorian president Nayib Bukele has celebrated this online on the social media platform X. The drop in homicides in the country has been attributed to Bukele's crackdown on gangs. The Salvadorian people seem receptive to this, as he won reelection in February of 2024. This does not mean that everyone is receptive to his policies, however. Human Rights Groups have criticized his mass incarceration as withholding prisoners' due process. The condition of prisoners in custody has also been criticized.
