The Malaysian government has continued pressing on its strict policy of political censorship, this time by taking action against an defiant Cambodian.
A Cambodian diaspora, this time a maiden, criticized Cambodian leaders over its deeply communist society. Nuon Toeun, the individual, worked in Malaysia for decades as a leader for one of Cambodia's opposition group to the communist party.
After making criticisms of the Cambodian government, Malaysia deported the individual after a stern request by the Cambodian government. What happens next for the defiant dissident is unknown. What is known is the large movement against this practice, started by human rights groups of victims of the practice. These groups have protested government censorship of ideas and have advocated for free asylum for dissidents in other countries without the risk of deportation.
Freedom House, one of these human rights groups, stated that this phenomenon is happening more regularly in recent years, and thus it is imperative for us to raise awareness of the situation.
