On Tuesday, Russia tested a nuclear-powered torpedo, which set off this chain of events. A day later, President Trump, on a Truth Social post, claimed that the United States will resume their own nuclear tests, something that has not been the case since 1992.
While Trump did not directly mention Russia's testing as a reason for the resumption, for many, the timing is too convenient. The Trump administration's policy with Russia has become far more focused on containment, something that is likely in part due to Trump's frustrations with Russia in Ukraine.
The reception to this move has, for the most part, been negative. Nevada's senator, Jacky Rosen, has slammed the president, noting Nevada's rough history of Nuclear testing. She has pledged to shut down any attempts by the government to resume testing on Nevada's soil. California Governor Gavin Newsom also criticized Trump's idea of Nuclear testing, with him saying "This is classic Trump and Trumpism. This guy is historically weak and these are acts of a weak person that is trying to appear strong. He has – it has the form and substance of fog."
Trump will likely face significant pushback, not just from state governments, but also from international agencies and average Americans.
