Intro
Michigan just raised the floor for low-wage workers and started a path to end the separate lower wage for tipped workers. For people living paycheck to paycheck, even a small bump in hourly pay adds up over a month.
What Changed
On February 21, 2025, Michigan’s minimum wage increases to $12.488 per hour. The state also sets a timeline to phase out the tipped wage entirely by 2030, so restaurant and bar workers move toward the same base pay as everyone else. Someone working full-time at the new minimum now sees more guaranteed pay before tips even enter the picture. Employers must rework budgets and prices, knowing that by 203,0 every hour on the schedule will cost more.
What to Watch Next
Watch how workers in tipped jobs describe the change in their total income over the next few years and whether hours are cut in response. Also, watch how other states respond to Michigan becoming the first state in about forty years to move toward one fair wage statewide.
