Even though the Baathist Syrian Government has been removed from power, Syria's problems seem to have no end. While the central government is gone, pro-Assadist forces remain. This is highlighted in the city of Latakia. Brutal fighting has occurred between the government and pro-Assadist soldiers. According to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, hundreds of civilians have lost their lives in the past few days, with most being caught up in the crossfire. This concerns predominantly the Alawite minority, where the former Syrian leader Assad originates from. The Alawites have been considered some of the most supportive of Assad in Syria. If Syria wants to mend ties with the western world, they have to make significant changes to their policy and show their dedication to preserving human rights.
