The New York City Comptroller Brad Lander was detained by ICE agents Tuesday outside of an immigration court.

Lander was detained by a group of ICE agents outside of an immigration court in New York City Tuesday. It is currently unknown if he would face any charges, but he currently remains in custody by law enforcement.
Kat Capossela, Lander’s press secretary, said to NBC News on Tuesday, "Brad was taken by masked agents and detained by ICE... escorting a defendant out of immigration court."
Lander has served as New York City Comptroller since January 2022, succeeding mayoral candidate Scott Stringer. A self-proclaimed progressive Democrat, Lander has been a strong critic of the Trump administration, especially its enforcement of strict immigration laws including the deportation of illegal immigrants by ICE in sanctuary cities like New York City.
Lander has also been a critic of incumbent mayor Eric Adams, who he has condemned for forcing municipal employees to follow a new healthcare plan.
He is currently a candidate in the 2025 New York City Mayoral Primary. In the polling, he has consistently been ranked third place, only behind former gov. Andrew Cuomo and state assemblyman Zohran Mamdani. Him and Mamdani cross-endorsed each other in an effort to create a strong opposition to Cuomo, who has been leading in the polls by large margins.
