Damage from Typhoon Shanshan on a Japanese residential area.
In Japan, Typhoon Shanshan has caused devastating damage. Heavy winds and rainfall began battering the Japanese coast first on Kyushu, Japan's third-largest island. According to Disaster Management Minister Yoshifumi Matsumura, the heavy winds and rainfall that Typhoon Shanshan could cause could be "unprecedented." He also told residents in the areas affected to evacuate to nearby shelters. Japan will have to deal with the cost of repairs, which could add more pain to an already slumping Japanese economy.
