Robert Fico is the current Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic. Recently, he has gotten into controversy due to his stance on Ukraine. Fico has stated that he opposed Ukrainian accession to NATO because he feared it would provoke Russia and lead to the Third World War. This has strained relations between Kyiv and Bratislava. Due to NATO's rules, just one member's objection would stall talks for any country to join. In May of this year, Fico had an assassination attempt on his life by a 71-year-old man who attempted it due to hating Fico and his treatment of the war in Ukraine, which he viewed as Slovakia bowing down to Russia. This has led to people fearing that Fico would feel vindicated in his views, which are now accurate. Even though Robert Fico has shown objection to Ukrainian accession to NATO, he has wholeheartedly supported Ukrainian accession to the European Union, with zero conditions.
