U.S. President Donald J. Trump has threatened new tariffs on the Russian Federation as ceasefire talks continue.

The president said the tariffs would be "very severe," specifically numbering "100%" if peace talks weren't arranged in a fixed time period of 50 days.

Trump alerted NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte about his new policy to Ukraine. Previously, he refused to tariff Russia and Ukraine to secure a peace deal that he promised would come within "24 hours." Now, more than 5 months into his presidency, his patience is running thin with Vladimir Putin, as he continues to wage a violent conflict with Ukraine, which has approved of a ceasefire.

Instead, Trump changed his Ukraine policy to be more like President Biden's interventionist policy, funding billions in U.S. arms purchased from NATO allies like Germany to support Ukraine. The president previously provided Patriot missiles and anti-air equipment to Ukraine.

NATO allies have reacted to this news by stating their intent to increase their defense spending by 5% or more, something that Trump has called for since his first term.

In fact, NATO has become more united than ever in its mission to combat Russian influence. This was built on "tremendous success" from the NATO summit in June per comment from Rutte.
