Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been pushing for a restart of ceasefire negotiations.
This time, however, Zelensky wants to meet with Putin directly. While Ukraine is not happy with the idea of conceding the Crimea or Donbass regions, it has acknowledged the fact that a ceasefire gives the country time to breathe, while also helping to facilitate prisoner swaps.
Ukraine's proposed ceasefire is not unconditional, however. Ukraine has pushed for greater prisoner swaps, along with Russia halting strikes on the country. Zelensky wants these negotiations to begin next week. American President Donald Trump has supported the idea of a ceasefire, with the nation sending Patriot missile-defense systems to Ukraine and threatening tariffs to pressure Moscow into negotiations.
