Democratic candidate Zohran Kwame Mamdani has officially won the Democratic primary for New York City, which he was presumptively named victorious last week on the first round of votes after outperforming expectations.

Mamdani defeated Cuomo in a landslide in the final tally, with him reaching 56% of the vote versus Cuomo's 44%. In total, Mamdani scored 545,334 votes as either first, second, third, fourth, or fifth candidate according to city voting law which allows for ranked-choice voting.
In the first round, Mamdani beat his opponents outright but did not get a 50% majority, only having 43.5% of the vote as a first-choice candidate.
As a result, Mamdani's lead in the second round got even higher against Cuomo, who's percentage did increase but not at the same level as the former.
Mamdani's massive increase in vote share could be attributed to the cross-endorsement between him and NYC Comptroller Brad Lander, who told his voters to rank Mamdani second. And they did just that.
Resentment against Andrew Cuomo was very prominent all across the board, not even just among Mamdani and Lander voters. Many people who voted for lesser candidates like Adrienne Adams and Scott Stringer also contributed to Mamdani's vote share. But some of these voters, especially coming from Whitney Tilson's share, moved to Cuomo.
In the general election, Mamdani will face two fellow Democrats turned independents - Andrew Cuomo and Eric Adams - along with the Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. In hypothetical polling so far, Mamdani has led the other three candidates along with the rising independent Jim Walden.
