DNC 2024: What To Look Out For

This week starting Monday, the Democratic National Convention will take place where thousands of Democrats across the nation will unite in support of this year's slate of candidates for Congress, gubernatorial/state races, and the presidency.

The most important aspect of the DNC to look out for is Kamala Harris' speech on Day 4, where she will be accepting her party's nomination for president and speak to voters about her list of proposals, as well as attacks against former president Donald Trump. It is crucial that Harris makes a good impression this week as she has been scrutinized for having very little policy proposals, borrowing some from Trump, and refusing to attend many live interviews. She will most likely defend her actions in the border, emphasize a women's right to an abortion in most circumstances, and recovering the economy through government intervention.

Harris is also arriving to the DNC with her running mate Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota. Walz is a lesser-known politician who is not recognized by many voters, so if Walz can make a good speech on Day 3, he can improve his reputation. Walz will stress his experience in the army, House of Representatives, and as a governor, also conveying that he is an average Midwestern guy seeking political office. He will need to defend his record from weaknesses such as him lying about his military rank, as well as his handling of the Black Lives Matter protests, many times riots, in Minneapolis.

You will also see a variety of notable Democrats speaking in the convention during the first 3 days. From Georgia senator Raphael Warnock to President Biden to Hillary Clinton, the DNC is surely packed with decades of Democrats willing to defend Biden. But each of these Democrats, like Harris and Walz, need to defend their mixed records, especially President Biden, who is ranked as one of the least popular presidents in modern American history. Keep an eye on what Biden says and how he connects his presidency to Harris.
